Characterization activities

I’ve seen a number of different activities and exercises designed to help you get to know your characters better. At Genreality this week they posted one that I thought was a really interesting and different approach – creating a bucket list for your character. In this case, it’s for the writer/crime-solver Castle (of the TV show). I haven’t watched the show but the list tells you a lot about the person Castle is – both externally and internally. Worth checking out.

In other things, I finished up the first pass of revisions on Secrets last night! It went fairly quickly, happily. For me, first pass is all about plugging known plot holes, adding extra characterization where it’s needed, fixing inconsistencies, and other obvious imperfections in order to try to get a smooth story. I sent it out to my awesome critique partners last night so they can point out all the stuff I missed or never even considered. I expect there to be a lot of it, but hope there’ll maybe be less of it than there was for Magestone. But we’ll see! In the meantime, I’m gearing up for the moth guide book tour, which I leave on in just under two weeks, so I won’t be doing a lot of fiction-related stuff until I return.
